Campania is the region around Naples and the Amalfi Coast, and it has given the world more food than any other Italian region. Pizza comes from here, as do mozzarella di bufala, the San Marzano tomato and those lemons that grow almost as large as melons.
This is not, however, a reference book on the region's cooking. It is a travel book. Saturated photographs by Lea Colombo, essays on the region and 21 recipes, several of them from the kitchen at Hotel Caruso in Ravello. Published in collaboration with Belmond, which owns the hotel, which explains both the selection and the atmosphere.
Twenty-one recipes across 208 pages tells you most of what you need to know about what this book is for. It is meant to be left out and leafed through, and makes an excellent present for someone who has been to the Amalfi Coast or dreams of going there. If you want to cook Campanian food seriously, buy something else, and that is not a criticism of the book but a description of it.
