The egg cup actually dates back to antiquity and the first time it was mentioned in Sweden was in the 1720s. During the 19th century, the nobility began to eat soft-boiled eggs from egg cups. And the egg cup still retains some of its status today, as the King always has a gold egg cup at his plate for fancy dinners. If the food doesn't please the king, he can always order in an egg.
