  • Information
    • The wolf in the title is the one at the door. The book was published in 1942 during American wartime rationing and is about how to eat well when there is barely anything to eat. Fisher's position is that it is precisely when you have little that cooking properly matters most, because taking care over a meal costs no more than indifference does.

The chapters have titles such as how to boil water and how to keep your spirits up while starving. The tone is dry enough that it never becomes preachy, and the advice is genuinely useful.

When the book was republished in the early 1950s, she chose not to rewrite it. Instead, she added comments in the margins in which she argues with her younger self, changes her mind and occasionally decides that she had been right all along. That device makes the book better than it was.
