The book is written by the team behind Death & Co, namely Alex Day, Nick Fauchald and David Kaplan, and builds the entire world of cocktails around six fundamental recipes: old fashioned, martini, daiquiri, sidecar, highball and flip.
The point is that the six were not chosen because they are popular but because they have different structures. An old fashioned is spirit plus sugar plus bitters. A martini is spirit plus fortified wine. A daiquiri is spirit plus citrus plus sugar.
