The two indentations in the base of the glass and on the side serve a dual function: they provide a stable grip between two fingers without the hand warming the wine, and they kick off an oxygenation process that starts breaking down the molecules right there in the glass.
Technique: hold the glass between two fingers and rotate to aerate the wine. With the nose close to the lower rim of the glass, the heavier aromas and the alcohol come through.
