Coravin is a favorite item among the staff at KitchenLab. As usual, this autumn they are releasing a limited edition of a colour that is much nicer than last year's. This anthracite gray version with gold details is inspired by precious stones and feels truly luxurious. As if that were not enough, they have also thrown in some accessories in the package, such as the aerator that decants the wine corresponding to 60-90 minutes in a decanter, a case, a stand, an extra standard needle, two screw caps and eight capsules! A little about Coravin: With its help, it is as easy as possible to pour a glass of wine without having to open the bottle. Put the module on the bottle neck and drive the needle down through the cork. Press the button that creates an overpressure in the bottle, and out of the nozzle comes wine. When you then pull the needle up again, the (natural) cork closes. Coravin is loaded with gas cartridges consisting of 99.99% pure argon. It is a noble gas whose atoms absolutely do not want to mix with others and therefore leave the wine unaffected. In the few seconds it takes for the cap to close, no oxygen has time to find its way into the bottle either, because argon is heavier than oxygen. Let's say you have a bottle on the shelf that you want to see if it's ready to drink now but aren't sure. Then it is easy to try it with the help of Coravin. Let's say there are two of you in company and one wants to have a glass of Château Cheval Blanc 1947 and the other is more in the mood for a Cabernet Sauvignon from Foot of Africa. With the help of Coravin, you can both have a glass of your favourite without having to argue about which bottle to open! The screw caps are used for wine bottles that already have a screw cap. Then you can quickly unscrew the original cork and replace it with Coravin's screw-on cork. This means that the wine will not be completely protected from oxygen, but that it will last significantly longer than without any action or compared to a vacuum pump. The needle is made of stainless steel and has a non-stick coating to easily slide through the cork. It wears out over time and can then be replaced with a new needle that is available in different designs. The cartridges are calculated for 15 glasses of 15 cl, but this requires a perfect technique that comes with practice. A 15 cl glass takes 25 – 29 seconds to pour through a standard pin.
