Mandy Lee moved from New York to Beijing when her husband got a job there, hated her six and a half years in the country, and cooked to keep herself from falling apart, which is a considerably more honest starting point than most cookbooks dare admit. The book is based on her blog Lady and Pups and contains just over eighty Asian-inspired recipes, along with rundowns of ingredients, equipment and the pantry basics she builds her whole kitchen around. The chapters are organised by mood and occasion rather than dish type. She's disrespectful toward the rules of food culture while being completely obsessed with execution, which makes the recipes more labour-intensive than they need to be and the book more fun than it has any right to be.
