A complete sake set consisting of a tokkuri (carafe) and two choko (cups). The set is made of stoneware with a dark, vibrant glaze that alternates between gray, black and brown tones - an expression of Japanese wabi-sabi, where each variation is seen as a sign of the authenticity of the craft.
Tokkuri is used to serve sake, hot (atsukan) or cold (reishu). The narrow-necked shape allows the drink to retain its temperature longer, while being easy to pour with precision. The two choko are small, hand-held cups that invite slow drinking and sharing - a central aspect of Japanese drinking culture. Filling someone else's cup before one's own is a gesture of respect, and the rhythm of pouring and refilling is as important a part of the sake experience as the taste itself.
The matte glaze and slightly uneven surface provide a tactile grip and subtly accentuate the sake: lighter varieties take on a warm glow, while darker junmai or yamahai take on depth and contrast against the muted ceramic.
The set works equally well for serving in restaurants and at home, and can also be used for other beverages such as umeshu (plum wine) or cold tea.
