A chopstick rest, or hashioki, is a small detail that makes a big difference when setting the table. It keeps the chopsticks clean between bites while showing respect for the food and the guest. In Japanese homes and restaurants, hashioki are used at almost every meal, especially when several dishes are served at once on small plates.
