Jealous Devil wants to offer legendary fuel to everyone who loves to grill. And if there's one fuel shrouded in more myth and mystery than binchotan, we'd like to know about it (troll potions and bear juice aside, obviously).

Binchotan is the process that creates the purest and most powerful charcoal imaginable. Its performance is so uniquely exceptional that the production technique has survived since the 1600s, passed down from generation to generation of charcoal masters. Binchotan is carbonised at extreme heat exceeding 1200°C over several days in specialised kilns. The process makes the charcoal uniquely dense - almost resembling metal or stone. It also gives the charcoal its extraordinary burning properties. Jealous Devil's binchotan is made from natural materials, namely extremely hard wood from Paraguay. The production process honours the Japanese tradition all the way to the finish line.

So what makes binchotan so special, and why does it cost more than regular charcoal? For one, it's incredibly easy to reuse. Extinguish the coals in water, let them dry, and use them again without noticing any drop in quality. That means an extraordinary number of burning hours compared to the porous charcoal you'd grab at a petrol station. The density also means heat output goes far higher than any other charcoal. In short, binchotan burns hotter and longer than any other type of grilling charcoal. And on top of all that, it's virtually smoke-free and delivers fantastic flavour. We do want to point out, however, that grilling involves a combustion process - the fire consumes oxygen and produces carbon monoxide even when no smoke is visible. Grilling should therefore always take place outdoors where ventilation is good.

The one small downside that comes with binchotan's many magnificent properties is that the charcoal is comparatively difficult to light, and a good firestarter can become a binchotan fan's best friend. A little patience is a small price to pay for charcoal that is simply outstanding!
