The masu is a small square wooden cup often used for drinking sake, but its history goes back much further than that.
For centuries, the masu was used as a measure in Japanese households and markets, where it indicated the unit gō - about 180 milliliters - for rice, soybeans and other staples. Later, when rice became the measure of wealth and the symbol of everyday luxury, the masu took on a new role: as a vessel for sake, celebration and hospitality.
Drinking sake from wood instead of glass is a different experience. The wood smells faintly of cypress or hinoki, giving a natural aroma that enhances the sweetness and warmth of the drink. When sake is poured into a masu, it is often filled to the brim, sometimes even overflowing onto a saucer or into a glass below - a gesture of generosity called mokkiri, symbolizing abundance.
At holidays, weddings and New Year's, masu are used as part of rituals, and many Japanese save their first masu as a memento rather than a utensil.
This model measures 8 × 8 cm and holds about one traditional gō. It is made of light untreated wood with classic finger joints in the corners - a construction that is both simple and almost unchanged since the Edo period.
It can be used to serve sake, but also to measure rice, present small accessories, or as a decorative container on the table. Some even put a small glass or porcelain cup in it to combine the scent of wood with the feel of glass against the lips.
The masu is also used outside the kitchen: as a symbol in architecture, in restaurant interiors, or as a gift filled with rice, tea leaves or sweets at inaugurations. The square shape represents stability and balance - a small, tactile reminder of everyday Japanese aesthetics where function and ceremony often merge.
To preserve the character of the wood, the cup should not be washed with detergent or soaked. Rinse it lightly and let it air dry. Over time, it will take on a faint golden tone and a soft surface that will only become more beautiful with use.
