This Japanese mortar, called suribachi, is made of glazed ceramic with an internally grooved surface that makes it easy to grind sesame seeds, spices or nuts to perfection. The white glaze gives it a timeless look that makes it equally at home in modern and traditional Japanese kitchens.
Together with a surikogi (wood pestle), it is used to create classic condiments such as goma-ae and miso dressings, where texture and flavor balance are crucial.
Diameter 12 cm. Made in Japan. Supplied without pestle which is purchased separately.
