Think, it’s nearly the weekend again! Time to take a quick shower after clocking out, dab on something that smells vaguely decent and make our way over to friends and acquaintances to try some new and exciting recipe the host found in a magazine and copied from a colleague. Maybe it contains pink peppercorns or something equally cutting edge? Maybe there’s a half avocado with tinned prawns to start? Maybe things have moved on in this department since I was small and dragged along to similar dinner parties?
What hasn’t changed is that turning up empty-handed simply isn’t done. Instead of bringing a bottle of something someone distilled in their shed, or a bottle of celebrity wine tipped in the local paper’s weekend supplement, here is a very lovely and warmly received suggestion.
A selection of assorted delicacies containing Spanish manzanilla olives, fried Marcona almonds and no fewer than three different varieties of Portuguese sardines, which on their own already make a rather fine present. For those who thought that was already charming, we are delighted to report that we have thought of everything: the kit also includes lovely snack forks in the shape of sardines in a delightful tin. Perfect for ensuring everyone in the group can nibble away without getting sticky fingers, and thus lower the volume so you can talk a bit during the music act on Strictly without smearing the remote control. Expect to be invited back!
