30 DAYS OPEN PURCHASERichard Sapper was officially in charge of grating the cheese at home. With three daughters and a wife to serve, he decided to do the job properly. The result is Todo, introduced in 2004 and one of the most theatrical objects in the Alessi catalogue. Sapper belonged to a small group that shaped Milanese industrial design in the post-war period: he arrived in the city in the 1950s, worked with Gio Ponti and then with Marco Zanuso for sixteen years, won the Compasso d’Oro eleven times and designed Alessi’s 9090 espresso maker, the product that earned the brand its first Compasso d’Oro. He died in 2015.
Todo is a grater in 18/10 stainless steel with a beechwood handle. Its truncated conical form allows one hand to hold it securely while the other runs the cheese along the body. One movement gives one portion, directly onto the plate. On the back is a fine-toothed section for nutmeg. Its height means Todo does not disappear into a drawer but knows its place standing out in the open.
