Not because the compost is full, but because what's inside has had a couple of days to come to terms with its existence since being thrown in and no longer has any intention of keeping it to itself.
You just force a family member to take it out. That solves the problem for the day, but a week later you're back in the same situation, and it's at that point you start to realize the problem can't be solved (without having to take out the bins often). Organic food scraps at room temperature have a specific lifecycle, and that lifecycle is not adapted to the bin collection schedule.
FoodCycler takes a different approach. Instead of waiting for food scraps to be collected and taken away, they are handled on the spot. The unit has a 3.5 or 5-litre bucket that is filled with food scraps, vegetable peelings, coffee grounds, eggshells and most other organic matter. Then you press a button. The Vortech grinder grinds down the contents and dries them, the active carbon filter ensures there is no smell during the process, and after four to nine hours the volume has been reduced by up to 90 per cent and what remains is a dry, fine-grained material called Foodilizer. Dry means it doesn't smell. Not even a little.
Foodilizer can be mixed into compost, added to flower beds or plant pots as a soil improver, or simply thrown in the brown bin without having to worry about what happens until the next collection. Since the volume has been so dramatically reduced, it's no longer a problem in practice that the bin isn't emptied every week. All of a sudden you have the opportunity, just like the Americans in the picture, to stand around chatting over the compost while cutting the soft crusts off your toast!
