A heavy and tight Japanese cast-iron container, in Japanese sumitsubo, specifically designed to extinguish and store glowing coals such as binchotan. When the lid is put on, the oxygen quickly suffocates and the embers die out without the need for water. This allows the charcoal to be saved and reused several times, which is part of the traditional Japanese grilling culture (sumiyaki).
Sumitsubo is used in professional yakitori and robatayaki kitchens where temperature control and charcoal quality are crucial. The cast iron holds tight and withstands high heat, while cooling slowly and protecting the surroundings from heat. This model also features a lifting lid with ring, and small side brackets for safe handling even when the vessel is hot.
The surface is painted in dark green enamel for rust protection and a classic Japanese workshop character.
In addition to extinguishing charcoal, the container can be used to store dry binchotan, small utensils or as a heat-resistant ash urn.
