"The moka pot is a Southern European coffee maker designed to brew espresso-style coffee directly on the stovetop. With its timeless form and solid construction in aluminium and steel, it delivers an even and stable extraction with every brew, making it suitable for both everyday use and as part of a more formalised coffee ritual. The handle is designed to provide a secure and comfortable grip even when the pot is hot, allowing for controlled pouring and serving without compromising precision. The matte surface and clear lines of the design create an expression that feels modern while remaining deeply rooted in classic Italian coffee tradition.
This espresso pot is intended for use on traditional cooktops and works with gas, electric and ceramic heat sources, but not induction. To solve this, an induction adapter for moka pots can be used, such as Alessi’s Little Helper. The brewer is easy to clean and maintain after use, contributing to its role as a reliable and long-lasting kitchen tool. The combination of form, function and material choices makes Alessi’s moka pot a tool that both produces excellent coffee and adds a distinct, design-led presence to the home.
Practical tips for making espresso with a moka pot:
Start by unscrewing the parts. In the bottom chamber, fill water up to just below the valve. Fill the filter with finely ground coffee so it slightly overflows, then level it off without pressing or tamping. Screw on the top and place it on the stove with the lid open until the coffee starts to flow. Close the lid and remove the pot from the heat as soon as brewing is complete.
The first brew should be discarded, as it will not taste good. Due to its material, the moka pot needs to build up a “seasoning”, similar to a carbon steel pan, from oils and fats from previous brews. Rinse with hot water only and do not use detergent or other cleaning agents. A used moka pot is a good moka pot.
Choose the size of your moka pot according to your needs. You cannot brew a half pot; it works on an all-or-nothing principle. One cup in this context refers to an espresso cup, which may feel unfamiliar to a Northern European."
