In Japan, eight is a lucky number. The character for eight, 八, widens towards the bottom like a fan, and it has come to symbolise something that grows and becomes greater over time. That's why octagonal chopsticks are a popular choice when entertaining.
This set of five pairs of octagonal chopsticks comes from Kawai in Obama in Fukui, who have been making chopsticks since 1943. At Kawai the set goes by the name ""perfect for guests"", and that's pretty much what it is. The eight sides keep the chopsticks steady in the hand and stop them rolling off the table.
Five pairs in natural colour, 22.5 cm long.
