A choko is the small cup used for sake, often accompanied by a decanter - tokkuri.
This model is made of ceramic with a deep blue glaze that transitions into dark gray and black speckled surface towards the foot. It shifts in tone like still water at dusk, with each angle reflecting the light differently. The color is not only decorative, it plays a practical role: blue glaze is traditionally used to accentuate sake with a clear, almost silvery-white luster - like pure junmai or lightly chilled ginjo.
The cup is low and round, with a thin rim that allows the drink to flow softly against the lip and preserve the aromas close to the nose. This particular shape is common in restaurants and sake tastings, where you want to feel heat and aroma in the same motion.
In Japan, chokos are also used as small bowls for soy, ponzu or yuzukosho, and are often part of kaiseki table settings where each vessel is chosen to reflect the season and dish. A blue cup is often used in summer to symbolize coolness, stillness and clarity, especially when sake is served cold.
Contains 50 ml, equivalent to a traditional sake serving.
