Ceiling-Mounted Glass Rack - Swedish Wine Rack

There's a reason bars hang their glasses upside down from the ceiling, and it isn't just because it looks cool. Although it does. Glasses hanging by their feet take up no shelf space, they're always within reach, dust doesn't settle in the bowl and they dry and air themselves after washing. Plus it becomes completely impossible to pretend you don't have any wine glasses when the neighbour turns up with a bottle in hand.

The rack screws into the ceiling, or under a kitchen cabinet or shelf, and the glasses slide into the rails foot up so they hang securely. It fits all stemmed glasses, such as wine glasses, champagne glasses and stemmed beer glasses. How many fit depends on the size of the glasses, so treat the number as approximate with standard wine glasses. The racks for three or fifteen glasses have 30 cm deep rails (three glasses per rail), while those for four or twenty glasses have 40 cm deep rails (four glasses per rail). The number of rows multiplied by the rail length therefore gives the estimated number of glasses the rack can hold, which makes this a lovely little primary-school maths exercise for whoever is planning the installation.

The rack is made of steel with a powder-coated finish and has a simple, straight shape that works just as well in a home kitchen as in a restaurant or bar. It comes in several sizes and in black, grey, silver and gold. The gold one is gold-coloured rather than brass, but looks every bit as festive. The smallest have a single rail for three or four glasses and suit the space above a kitchen island or a corner of the kitchen. The mid-size holds twelve glasses. The largest have five rails side by side and hold 15 or 20 glasses, and they're built for anyone who's serious about dinner parties, or who has a bar at home and isn't afraid to show it.
