There are cakes that say congratulations, and then there are cakes that stare back at you with empty eye sockets. This pan makes six small skull-shaped cakes, with skeletal details and eye sockets, and it's equal parts creepy and irresistible. Halloween is the obvious occasion, but there's no rule saying you can't serve skulls on an ordinary Tuesday. Quite the opposite.
The pan is good for much more than cakes. Bake small chocolate cakes, brownies or cornbread, set jelly or freeze ice cream in it. A dark chocolate cake looks striking with a little icing sugar in the eye sockets, and a red velvet cake makes the whole thing even more macabre, something children tend to appreciate far more than adults. The pan holds approx. 1.2 litres in total, so each skull is a nicely sized portion.
The pan is cast in thick aluminium that conducts heat evenly, so all six cakes bake the same. The inside has a non-stick coating, but for every detail to release perfectly, each cavity needs to be brushed thoroughly with butter and dusted with flour or cocoa before every bake. Fill no more than three-quarters full.
