Modular Wine Rack - Swedish Wine Rack

Wine collections have a tendency to grow. It starts with a couple of bottles from a trip, then a few more that were too good to pass up, and suddenly there's wine in the wardrobe, under the bed and behind the vacuum cleaner. The only thing that has ever made a wine collection shrink is a family gathering, but that's nowhere near as much fun as collecting more new bottles. Besides, the more time passes, the harder it gets to find a bottle that matches the company without being pearls before swine, so the collection keeps growing anyway. That's also why this wine rack is modular. Start with what fits today, and build on when the collection – or the ambition – grows.

The construction is the classic one you'll recognise from wine cellars and wine shops: wooden frames held together by metal rods, where each bottle lies down in its own slot. Lying the bottles down keeps the cork moist, so it doesn't dry out and let air in. Most standard 75 cl wine and champagne bottles fit. The rack is approx. 23 cm deep, so the bottle lies securely while the neck sticks out a little, and you can see what you have without pulling out every bottle.

The wine rack is delivered flat-packed and is easy to assemble without special tools. Several racks can then be joined side by side or on top of each other with a joining kit sold separately, so a small rack for twelve bottles can in time become a whole wall. On the back there are pre-drilled holes for fixing the rack to the wall, which is a good idea if it gets tall or if there are children or cats with an underdeveloped sense of gravity in the house.

It comes in three colours. Light wood gives an airy impression and suits a Scandinavian kitchen. Dark wood gives the classic feel of an old wine cellar. Black is graphic and austere and makes the bottles look like exhibits. Sizes range from 12 bottles, which fits on a worktop or shelf, to 90 bottles for anyone who has stopped pretending this is just a hobby.
