Paris, sometime around 1890. The cafés fill up at around five o'clock, and on every table stands a glass of something bright green. Across the glass lies a flat, slotted spoon holding a sugar cube, and ice-cold water drips slowly through the sugar into the spirit until it turns cloudy and milky-opalescent. The French called this moment l'heure verte, the green hour. Absinthe was later blamed for most of what went wrong in Europe and banned in several countries for almost a century, but never mind that: it's back now, and that means the spoon is needed again!
This absinthe spoon comes from Belgian brand Eternum and is made of 18/10 stainless steel. It rests across the glass, and the rest is simply patience. It also works brilliantly for stirring a glass of pastis, or simply for owning the world's most dramatic sugar cube holder.
